Many new vehicles today are equipped with window and mirror technologies that do not normally present a service issue until you break one. For example, late model GM trucks are equipped with exterior mirrors that have a dimming feature improving night driving safety. The technology behind these mirrors is electrochromic fluid. This fluid, when energized by a small voltage signal, changes its light reflecting properties.
This technology is used in commercial building and homes allowing you to block all light coming through the window with the flick of a switch. When applied to mirrors on today's vehicles, the technology is used to change the light reflective qualities of the glass to provide safety when driving at night. Now here comes the tip.
The exterior mirrors on late model GM trucks are filled with electrochromic fluid. If you back out of the garage and knock the mirror off or crack the glass, the fluid can leak out and most likely get on the paint. If this happens to you, immediately wash the fluid off the paint with water, as it will quickly damage the paint finish. Be cautious handling the fluid spill. If it can damage the paint it is not wise to get it on your hands, in your eyes, or on your clothes.
The cost of the replacement glass is quite expensive so be careful. While breaking a mirror may not bring seven years of bad luck it can certainly ruin your day.
