S&S Service Center - The Flat Jerry Project

Flat Jerry is a light-hearted project run by S&S Service Center Inc. in Kansas City. The auto repair business can be a very serious one, so owner Jerry Holcom likes to add a bit of levity whenever he can, to boost morale and have a bit of fun.

History:

The tradition goes back several years when business owner Jerry wanted to engage with his community. He came up with "Bobblehead Jerry," which was his first device, viewed with much hilarity by his friends and family

The next year, keen to build on the success of the bobblehead, Jerry created "Pez Jerry," which dispensed sweets to those close to him and many who visited S&S. In 2009, it was the "Just for You" balloons, and this year it's "Flat Jerry."

What?

Flat Jerry is a life-size cardboard cutout of Jerry, which magically appeared under various Christmas trees in Kansas City. One has also decided to visit S&S Service Center to greet customers as they come in.

The original idea was came from a 1964 children's book in which Stanley Lambchop gets flattened by a bulletin board falling on him, but discovers that in his flattened state he is able to have fun, even to the point of being used as a kite by his brother Arthur. But mostly, he is able to travel the world by being mailed in an envelope!

The Flat Stanley Project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a schoolteacher in London, Ontario, Canada. It is meant to facilitate letter-writing by schoolchildren to each other as they document where Flat Stanley has gone with them.

Jerry thought he could use a similar idea with his Flat Jerrys, and hopefully have them photographed in some weird and wonderful places.

It was quickly realized that a 6-foot cardboard cut-out doesn't travel too well, so Jerry created smaller ones for anyone wanting to join in.

It's a big world out there, and Flat Jerry has only seen a small part of it. Wouldn't it be nice if he could get to see much more of it before he retires?

How?

Anyone wanting to join in the fun can download a copy of Flat Jerry to print out and take with them on their travels. Simply take a photo of Jerry next to a landmark, a celebrity, or in an unusual situation and send it to us.

All suitable pictures will be displayed on the website for all to see. A panel will judge them, and the most innovative one, or the one that gets the most laughs, will win an Apple iPad.

It's better if you print it out on construction paper as it will last longer. Alternatively, call us at 816-361-0000 and see if we have a loaner Flat Jerry you can use on your travels.

Email your pictures of Flat Jerry to flatjerry@swbell.net.

The contest will run through vacation season, and next September we'll judge them and award the prize.
